What we do
South Gippsland Hospital has a fully equipped operating room, post-anaesthetic care and Sterilising Supply Department (SSD).
The operating suite team perform between 800 – 900 planned surgical procedures each year, with visiting or local surgeons and local anaesthetists providing services on a regular basis.
Service provision includes:
- General Surgery
- Obstetrics and Gynaecology
- Urology and
- Gastroenterology (Endoscopy)
Operating sessions are generally scheduled five times per fortnight with on-call staff available 24/7 for after-hours emergency caesarean section procedures.
Surgical pre-admission is provided on nominated weekdays
The SSD processes sterile stock for departments throughout the hospital and community health.
How you access
Access to the planned surgical preparation list is via referral to one of our surgeons / proceduralists by your General Practitioner.
Referrals are assessed by senior nursing staff to determine if your needs fit within the capability of our service.
When you are accepted onto the Planned Surgery Preparation List you will have been allocated a category (1-3) based on your clinical condition.
You will be contacted and offered a date for surgery / procedure.
Who can use our service?
SGH is a public hospital and if your procedure and health status fits within our surgical and anaesthetic capability, you will be able to receive you care with us. Private patients may choose to use their private health insurance.
Are there any fees?
You will not incur any bills from SGH for your procedure.
You may incur an account for out-of-pocket expenses from the medical centre rooms.
